In the Mets' wide-ranging search for trades that will help them fulfill GM Brodie Van Wagenen's mandate of winning "now and in the future," the team has engaged with the Arizona Diamondbacks on starter Robbie Ray, according to major league sources.

Ray, 27, is under control until 2021. He's 9-6 this season, with a 3.96 ERA.

This is consistent with Van Wagenen's engagement on starters like Marcus Stroman, not to mention Corey Kluber last offseason. The idea has always been to move Noah Syndergaard for prospects, then replace him in the rotation with a comparable arm.

In the offseason, some of these scenarios involved complex three-team trades, and never came to pass. This may fall into the same category, but it's another example of Van Wagenen's hyper-aggressive style.

The Yankees have also spoken to the Diamondbacks about Ray.
