The Mets, Yankees and Marlins are discussing a potential three-team deal that could involve RHP Noah Syndergaard going to the Yankees and catcher J.T. Realmuto going to the Mets, according to multiple reports.
There is a "real possibility," SNY.tv's Andy Martino reports, that Syndergaard joins the Yankees in a blockbuster trade, however the Mets are also considering "10 other scenarios," according to Martino.
Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen said earlier this offseason it would take "very special circumstances" to "even consider" trading Syndergaard, the dominant Mets starter who went 13-4 with a 3.03 ERA in 25 starts last season.
The Mets have received "significant trade interest" in Syndergaard during the offseason, Martino reported last month, and the Yankees have actively sought starting pitching this offseason.
However, Martino reports the Yankees' interest is not limited to Syndergaard.
The Yankees were unable to land top free-agent starting pitcher Patrick Corbin, but have been linked to possibly making a trade for either Corey Kluber or Trevor Bauer of the Indians.
Yankees GM Brian Cashman has been active this offseason, landing Mariners LHP James Paxton last month, however he denied the team's interest in Realmuto, the Marlins All-Star catcher who hit .277 with 21 home runs and 74 RBIs last season.
The Mets, on the other hand, have been aggressively pursuing Realmuto. Though trade talks had been losing steam heading into the Winter Meetings due to the Marlins' high asking price, Miami has begun to push to finish a deal involving Realmuto, according to ESPN's Buster Olney. And according to MLB.com's Joe Frisaro, the Mets are considered to be one of three teams in the mix for the catcher.
Miami is looking for two controllable pieces, such as Amed Rosario and Brandon Nimmo, according to Martino.
The Mets have discussed two- and three-team deals involving Realmuto and others, according to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal, and have been pursuing Realmuto throughout the offseason.
While the Mets held a meeting with free-agent catcher Wilson Ramos on Monday night, Van Wagenen spoke highly of Realmuto on "Mets Hot Stove", calling him a "six-tool player" who has "got make-up that's off the charts."
However, landing Realmuto could cost the Mets Syndergaard.
When Van Wagenen first took the Mets GM position, he didn't rule out the possibility of trading Syndergaard or Jacob deGrom, but he later walked back those comments.
"I think Jacob and Noah have been and will continue to be really important pieces in this organization," Van Wagenen said on Nov. 8. "... I think my comments were to the same point that I would characterize all of our roster right now. We're going to continue to look for ways to improve the club. I love our starting pitching, I love our rotation right now."
