After a rough go in his first career start, Mets RHP Corey Oswalt was looking to redeem himself in Toronto on Wednesday.
Oswalt was given short notice that Jacob deGrom wasn't going to make his normally scheduled start in Miami last week, and the lack of preparation seemed to cost him as he was out after allowing six runs over 2.2 innings. This time around,
Oswalt had as much time as he needed to dial in, and things went a lot smoother for the 24-year-old.
Going four innings, the righty allowed two runs on five hits while striking out two and walking one. He didn't get the win, but it was a step in the right direction.
It was a 1-2-3 first inning to begin Oswalt's night, but the same couldn't be said in the second. Kendrys Morales got the best of a hanging slider on a 1-2 count, and sent it over the right field fence to get the Jays on the board first.
Russell Martin would lace a single in the next at-bat, and would move to second following a wild pitch. However, Oswalt would work out the inning, leaving Martin stranded to end the frame.
More trouble came Oswalt's way in the fourth when Morales doubled and Martin walked to put two runners on base with one out. He managed to get Randal Grichuk to strike out swinging, but Lourdes Gurriel Jr. roped a single to center to give the Jays the lead once again.
Though Oswalt didn't go longer than he might have hoped, this start could very well be the one that keeps him up in the MLB instead of seeing a demotion.
