Jets QB Trevor Siemian, who exited Monday night's loss against the Browns due to an ankle injury, is out for the season, head coach Adam Gase said on Tuesday.
Gase said the injury was ligament related and that there was no break, adding that Siemian will likely need surgery.
While the Jets are now without starter Sam Darnold and their backup, Gase said Tuesday that the team will go with Luke Falk as their starter until Darnold returns -- with the team looking to acquire a backup.
Gase had specifically targeted Siemian before the season to be Darnold's backup.
Siemian suffered the injury on Monday while scrambling to his right. He was hit by Myles Garrett and his ankle was caught underneath his body and folded awkwardly. The play occurred on a third-and-16 play and earned Garrett a roughing the passer penalty.
Siemian was 3-for-6 passing with three yards prior to exiting the game.
