Despite never playing the Giants during the regular season and not even occupying the same conference (let alone division), Browns QB Baker Mayfield seemingly has Big Blue on the brain. And his latest shot came at the expense of Daniel Jones.
During an interview with GQ's Clay Skipper, Mayfield's eyes were drawn to a SportsCenter segment about the Giants. And he unloaded.
"I cannot believe the Giants took Daniel Jones," Mayfield said. "Blows my mind."
Mayfield -- who has been running his mouth all offseason just like new teammate Odell Beckham Jr. -- was then pressed by Skipper about the idea that so many scouts don't understand what makes a good quarterback
"Some people overthink it," Mayfield said. "That's where people go wrong. They forget you've gotta win."
It's unclear whether Mayfield's second comment was about Jones, but the intent of his first comment was clear.
Mayfield isn't alone when it comes to his surprise about the Giants taking Jones at No. 6. But there seems to be a disconnect when it comes to what most pundits think about the selection and what others in league circles think, as outlined recently in a piece by SNY's Ralph Vacchiano.
"I'm sure some teams thought it was high, but nobody thought it was crazy," one NFC executive told Vacchiano. "We all liked this kid. He's not an all-time great prospect, but he's a good one. And (the Giants) needed a quarterback, too. It made perfect sense. I don't understand the hits (Gettleman) is taking."
Roughly a month before bashing Jones, Mayfield took aim at Giants fans while also coming to the defense of Beckham.
"He's here to work, and he wants to be surrounded by people who love him and support him and allow him to be himself," Mayfield told ESPN's Mina Kimes. "He's here to play in front of fans who actually care, who will actually show up to every game and pack the stadium and love him for who he is."
Mayfield's claim that Browns fans "pack the stadium" wan't factually accurate -- especially compared to his claim that Giants fans don't.
But Mayfield's comments about the Giants have fit a trend this offseason, with Beckham having gone on several rants about the Giants since being traded.
Beckham's recent comments came on July 22, when he said Giants GM Dave Gettleman had "disrespected" him.
With all of this going on, the real shame of this is that the Giants and Browns don't play this year. That matchup will have to wait until 2020.
