More details of Yoenis Cespedes' amended contract with the Mets have now been reported.
According to the Associated Press, Cespedes' base salary, which originally was going to be $29.5 million, is now $6 million. However, if Cespedes doesn't start the season on the Injured List due to a foot or ankle injury, that base moves up to $11 million.
There are also a variety of incentives in the contract that would reward him based on how many plate appearances he has in 2020. The highest threshold is 650 PAs, which would raise his pay all the way up to $20 million, according to the AP.
Other bonuses are also built in if Cespedes were to make the All-Star Game (up to $500,000), win a Gold Glove (up to $750,000) or take home a Silver Slugger Award (up to $750,000), to go along with playoff MVP incentives.
Cespedes, 34, is entering the final year of what was originally a four-year, $110 million deal with the Mets. The slugger recently told Eduardo Perez just how motivated he is to return from his ankle injuries that forced him to sit out the entire 2019 season.
Since the news of Cespedes' amended contract was initially reported by SNY's Andy Martino on December 13, teams have reportedly reached out to the Mets about potential trading for him.
Joel Sherman of The Post had previously reported that Cespedes' base salary could become less than $10 million.
The Mets' starting outfield, as of now, is likely comprised of JD Davis in left field, Brandon Nimmo and Jake Marisnick sharing time in center, and Michael Conforto in right. Due to his injuries, Cespedes has been a wild card, but if he can return to form, he'd certainly be a huge plus for the Mets.
