The Jets have been one of the most active teams in the NFL this offseason. Between a coaching change, a few big-name signings in free agency, control of the third overall pick in the NFL Draft and heightened expectations, the Jets haven't had this much to look forward to entering a season in quite a while.
Owner Christopher Johnson, speaking at the NFL's Owners Meetings in Arizona on Sunday, touched on those topics, plus more.
Here are the main takeaways from what the Jets owner had to say:
1. Johnson believes the team has a chance to make the playoffs
The Jets have not reached the playoffs since the 2010 season, when they reached back-to-back conference AFC Championship games during the early Rex Ryan-Mark Sanchez days. While that may feel like a lifetime ago, Johnson is confident the team can end the postseason drought sooner rather than later.
"I sure as hell hope we're a playoff team," Johnson told reporters before adding, "we can't get there fast enough.
"If we win a Lombardi Trophy, I'll wear it around like a crown."
It may not be a playoff mandate, but it's clear the owner would like to see his team contend in 2019.
2. The Jets may not be done this offseason
Signing running back Le'Veon Bell, trading for offensive lineman Kelechi Osemele and signing linebacker C.J. Mosley were just some of the moves New York made with a plethora of cap space and a roster need of revamping.
Although Johnson did not point to any specific areas of need, he noted that holes still exist across the roster, and that the Jets will do all in their power to continue addressing them.
"The fans are going to love this," he said. I know they love the Bell signing, Mosley signing, [Osemele trade]. We've given Sam [Darnold] more targets and better protection. We still have the draft to go through. I think they're going to see our plan unfold and they'll be happy with it."
3. Free agents must be 'all in' on Jets
Johnson briefly addressed the Anthony Barr fiasco from the beginning of free agency. The Vikings linebacker had a deal in place with the Jets, but reneged and ultimately re-signed with the Vikings after reportedly feeling sick to his stomach about the initial decision.
The owner expressed his disappointment in Barr's decision, but emphasized his desire for the team to sign players who "want to be New York Jets."
"Not everybody wants to be in New York," Johnson said. "If he didn't want to be here, that's fine. It's disappointing when someone backs out on an agreement, but we want people who are all-in."
4. Johnson is excited about the Adam Gase-Gregg Williams tandem
Defensive coordinator Gregg Williams and head coach Adam Gase have the X's and O's covered on defense and offense, respectively. Johnson was complimentary of Gase -- not that the new coach has had a chance to do much yet -- and labeled him as a "grinder." He was also "overjoyed" that Williams is coaching the defense.
As for whether the two, both of whom are known for their intensity, will bring that aspect of their personalities to the practice field and meeting rooms, Johnson quipped "It might get spicy."
He would not, however, comment on whether general manager Mike Maccagnan's future with the Jets is tied to Gase and the new coaching staff.
5. New uniforms are coming, and Johnson loves them
The Jets are set to unveil fresh uniforms on April 4. Though he wouldn't provide any details, Johnson has already taken a sneak peak at them and said, "They're pretty badass."
