The Yankees are reportedly among several teams who are interested in the Kansas City Royals' Mike Moustakas and would try to convert him into a first baseman, according to MLB.com's Jon Morosi.

The 29-year-old Moustakas, who has a mutual option for 2019 and could be a free agent at season's end, has played just two games at first base in his eight-year career, while he has played 871 games at third base.

Barring injury to Miguel Andujar, the Yankees do not need a third baseman, however Moustakas could be considered an upgrade over current first basemen Greg Bird and Neil Walker.

Yankees first basemen have hit .202 this season, which ranks third-worst in the majors, and have accounted for a minus-0.5 WAR, according to FanGraphs. Moustakas, meanwhile, has a .258/.312/.472 batting line with 16 home runs and 53 RBIs through 82 games this season, one year after he hit .272 with 38 home runs and 85 RBIs.

New York, according to Morosi, has considered other options in the infield over the past couple of weeks, however its priority remains shoring up its starting rotation.

The Cardinals and Phillies have also explored the possibility of acquiring Moustakas as a third baseman, Morosi reports.
