Six things to know about Tuesday's game
1) After a back-and-forth final few innings, Amed Rosario hustled out an infield single to give the Mets a walkoff 6-5 victory on Tuesday night at Citi Field. Nats' reliever Tanner Rainey walked two batters in the bottom of the ninth, and Rosario delivered with a high-hopping infield single to short off of Kyle Barraclough to give the Mets the win.
2) The Mets' bullpen failed to hold on to a seventh-inning lead. Jeurys Familia entered the game in the top of eighth, looking to shut down the Nats after the Mets had just dramatically pulled ahead. It wasn't in the cards for Familia, though, as Howie Kendrick singled and Trea Turner doubled him home, tying the game at 4-4. Later in the inning, Juan Soto doubled off of Daniel Zamora to give the Nats the lead.
3) Alonso continued his torrid home run pace with a majestic shot just inside the left field foul pole, tying the game 5-5 in the bottom of the eighth. Alonso's 16th home run of the year set a Mets' record for most home runs by a rookie before the All-Star break.
4) Zack Wheeler bounced back after a rough outing his last time out, pitching seven innings, allowing three earned runs, and striking out seven hitters. Wheeler allowed just one run through the first six innings, but Brian Dozier jumped on a hanging breaking ball for a two-run shot to break a 1-1 tie in the seventh inning.
5) J.D. Davis delivered in a huge spot for the Mets, clubbing an opposite-field three-run home run to give the Mets a 4-3 lead in the seventh inning. Davis waited on a Wander Suero breaking ball and deposited it to right field for his seventh long ball of the year.
6) Jeff McNeil snapped out of an 0-12 skid with a third-inning double down the right field line off of Nats starter Erick Fedde. His second hit of the night, a clutch, two-out single off the glove of Dozier in the bottom of the fifth, tied the game at 1-1.
