Mets shortstop prospect Andres Gimenez (World) has joined 1B prospect Peter Alonso (U.S.) on the Futures Game roster, with the game taking place on Sunday, July 15 -- before the All-Star Game on July 17.
The 23-year-old Alonso was recently promoted to Triple-A Las Vegas, where he is hitting .197/.361/.424 with four homers in 18 games.
Alonso battered pitching at Double-A Binghamton before his promotion, hitting .314/.440/.573 with 15 homers. MLB prospects expert Jim Callis went as far to say that he may well be the league's top first base prospect.
"Alonso has posted impressive power numbers since signing as a second-round pick in 2016, already has reached Triple-A and can make a case for being the best first base prospect in baseball," Callis said, via Michael Mayer.
The 19-year-old Gimenez, who is about three years younger than the average player in High-A, is hitting .269/.342/.410 with a league-leading 26 stolen bases for St. Lucie.
Viewed as a smooth-fielding shortstop who should stay at the position, Gimenez "has a smooth swing and a quick bat," wrote Greg Karam of Amazin' Avenue. "Couple that with his ability to make contact and his up-the-middle defensive prowess and there's a lot to be excited about."
Gimenez is ranked No. 74 (up from No. 83 before the season) on Baseball America's Top 100 Prospects list.
