Mets ace Jacob deGrom ended July in dominant fashion, with a five-start stretch where he posted a 1.09 ERA while striking out 46 and walking just 12 in 33.0 innings. And he kept moving up the Mets' all-time leaderboards in the process.
With his 11 strikeouts on Wednesday night against the White Sox, deGrom passed David Cone for fifth on the Mets' all-time strikeouts list.
DeGrom now has 1,174 strikeouts, and is looking up at these four pitchers:
1. Tom Seaver, 2,541
2. Dwight Gooden, 1,875
3. Jerry Koosman, 1,799
4. Sid Fernandez, 1,449
At his current pace, deGrom will pass Fernandez at some point during the 2020 season and conceivably pass Gooden in 2022.
Whether deGrom can topple Seaver remains to be seen, but aside from the strikeout totals, he is also already in the Mets' all-time Top 10 in most other pitching categories.
DeGrom is the Mets' all-time leader in WHIP at 1.073 and fourth in WAR at 29.9. He also has the best K/9 rate.
When it comes to hardware, deGrom is one of only four Mets pitchers to win a Cy Young award. Along with Dwight Gooden and R.A. Dickey, deGrom has won one Cy Young award. Tom Seaver has won three -- another lofty goal for deGrom to try to reach or even surpass.
