If Dwayne Haskins is on the board when the Giants make their pick in the upcoming NFL Draft and the team wants a quarterback with the pick, would they really pass on him?
NFL.com's first Mock has the Giants doing just that -- selecting Duke QB Daniel Jones instead and letting Haskins slip to the Buccaneers at No. 7.
Jones, 21, completed 237 of 392 passes (60.5 percent) for 2,674 yards with 22 touchdowns and nine interceptions in 11 games last season for Duke.
"He'll be a first-round draft choice if he does comes out," Duke head coach David Cutcliffe said late last year. "He's so accurate. He's big. He's fast. He's athletic. He understands the game. He's got a fast-twitch mind to go with that fast-twitch body. He's got impeccable character. You don't get many chances to draft a guy like that."
Writes NFL.com's Mike Zierlein:
This wouldn't be my selection if I were making the pick, but Big Blue needs a young QB to develop behind Eli Manning, and Jones' ties to Duke head coach David Cutcliffe -- Eli's college coach and mentor -- might be all the Giants need to push Jones over the top on their board as they try to make a smooth transition under center.
The Giants aren't the only quarterback-hungry team Zierlein predicts will pass over Haskins. He has Kyler Murray going No. 4 to the Raiders.
In SI.com's most recent Mock Draft, released Tuesday, they had the Giants taking Haskins at No. 6.
It isn't even known yet if the Giants want are targeting a quarterback in the Draft, SNY's Ralph Vacchiano noted earlier this week. And if the Giants do decide to pick who they hope will be Eli Manning's replacement, a wrench could potentially be thrown into things by the Jets, who currently hold the No. 3 pick.
