Four takeaways from Friday's game

1) Domingo German's night was cut short after 92 pitches in just 4.1 innings, as the righty was unable to get his 18th win of the season. He gave up five earned runs on three hits, while striking out five and walking four. German gave up a three-run homer to Red Sox 1B Mitch Moreland with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning, it was his 15th home run of the season.

2) Brett Gardner hit his 21st home run of the season in the top of the fifth inning to cut the Red Sox lead to 4-1. With that home run, Garnder tied his career-high for home runs in a season... the outfielder hit 21 home runs back in 2017.

3) Didi Gregorius went 1-for-4 with his 11th double of the season... he was the only other Yankee besides Garnder to get a hit.

4) The Red Sox gave the Yanks a taste of their own medicine, as they went with an opener pitcher and relied on the bullpen. Jhoulys Chacin got the start, and struck out four batters in his two innings of work. The Red Sox pitching staff struck out a total of 13 while allowing just three hits.

What's next

The Yankees continue their four-game series on Saturday at 4:05 p.m. with LHP J.A. Happ (11-8, 5.34 ERA). Because of injuries in the rotation -- Price and LHP Chris Sale (6-11, 4.40 ERA), who was transferred to the 60-day injured list with left elbow inflammation on Sept. 1, the Red Sox do not yet have a projected starter.
