The Giants have added a versatile piece to Wink Martindale’s defense ahead of their preseason finale.

According to multiple reports, the Giants are acquiring linebacker Isaiah Simmons from the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for a 2024 seventh-round pick.

Simmons, just 25, was selected by the Cardinals as the eighth overall pick in the 2020 draft out of Clemson. While his career hasn’t exactly lived up to that Top 10 billing, Simmons has improved in each of the last two seasons after playing just seven games as a rookie.

The Cardinals previously declined Simmons' fifth-year option, making him a free agent following this year.

In 2022, Simmons recorded a career-best 4.0 sacks and two interceptions, while also forcing two fumbles and recovering another.

While Simmons, listed at 6-foot-4 and 238 pounds, certainly fits the bill of Martindale’s “position-less" defense, it sounds like he will slot in as an inside linebacker next to Bobby Okereke, filling a need for the Giants after Jarrad Davis was lost for the season with a knee injury.

But where Simmons lines up could change certainly change in Martindale's "position-less" scheme, especially when it comes to rushing the passer and blitzing.

“I think there is the coordinators that just like to rush four and play coverage. We like to put pressure on the quarterback in different ways because like I have said many times, pressure breaks pipes. It’s one of those things where I say it’s a position-less defense,” Martindale said Wednesday when talking about his blitz schemes. “So I just don’t limit them and put them in a box of just an edge rusher. It’s what they do best, how can we get a free runner to the quarterback and what it takes is 11 selfless guys out there and that’s what you are seeing with us, with our guys. They are selfless players. They care about each other more than they care about themselves.”
