Brandon Marshall says Giants aren't well-run: 'They want a certain guy, and I think that puts them in a box'

'I think they're great people, I think they're a great organization, but I don't think they're disruptive enough'

Brandon Marshall played only five games with the Giants during one injury-riddled season in 2017, but he was not shy Thursday while making critical comments about his former team.

When asked if he thought the Giants were a well-run organization, Marshall said "I did not."

"I think they're great people, I think they're a great organization, but I don't think they're disruptive enough," Marshall said during an appearance on The Herd on FS1. "There are a few organizations like the Chicago Bears, the New York Giants, even the Pittsburgh Steelers, where it's all about history. They don't want to change certain things. They want a certain guy, and I think that puts them in a box when the game is changing every year; when the culture of the kid is changing every year. When the culture of the coach is changing every year.

"So I think, yes, they have great leadership -- great people -- but they're so rich in tradition and they want to preserve that so much that it handicaps them from actually competing today."

Some of the above sounds as if Marshall may be alluding to the philosophy of Dave Gettleman, specifically the part about the Giants wanting a "certain guy" as it pertains to the culture of players.

GM Dave Gettleman, who was hired in December of 2017 (Marshall was released in April of 2018), has spoken often about not wanting players who are distractions. But what constitutes a "distraction" in Gettleman's eyes isn't entirely clear.

Looking at some of the players Gettleman has moved on from, it seems that a "distraction" may be any player who is outspoken -- such as Odell Beckham Jr. and Landon Collins.

And it can be argued that moving on from any player who is viewed as too outspoken would put any team at a severe disadvantage in an age when players are more outspoken than ever.
