With the 2020 MLB Draft being only five rounds instead of the usual 40, there are roughly 1,000 prospects who would've gotten drafted under the new rules who were left looking for teams.
On Sunday, the Yankees signed one of those players.
RHP Carson Coleman, who was a redshirt junior this season for Kentucky, has agreed to a deal as an undrafted free agent, the school announced.
Coleman was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 33rd round of the 2019 MLB Draft, but opted to return to Kentucky instead of signing with the Rays.
A reliever whose fastball is typically 92-94 mph, Coleman had a 4.19 ERA with 81 strikeouts in 53.2 innings (all in relief) in three seasons with the Wildcats.
For all players who sign as undrafted free agents, the bonus limit per player is $20,000
It should be expected that many college seniors and college juniors will sign. It's not out of the question that some younger college players and/or high school players will sign, but the bulk of the signees will likely be older college players due to the fact that their options are limited.
