He added that he has already met with 4-5 guys who are local in NY for a meal to introduce himself and start getting to know the players.
5/25/18 | David Quinn plans to meet with as many Rangers as he can
David Quinn told Elliotte Friedman that he intends to meet with as many of the current Rangers as he can before next season starts. (Sportsnet)
Quinn said on the radio on Thursday that besides coaching Kevin Shattenkirk at BU, he knows Kevin Hayes, Jimmy Vesey, Chris Kreider, Brady Skjei and Brendan Smith. (ESPN NY Radio)
Quinn coached Skjei at the 2016 World Championships and, besides being from the Boston area, likely tried to recruit Hayes, Vesey, Kreider and Smith to BU.
Kevin Hayes said of his history with Quinn, "I met David when I was in high school and getting recruited by colleges. BU was actually the first team to reach out to me and since then we have had s pretty good friendship. He is friends with my family and he is a great guy. He's an unbelievable coach. He just said to me that it was destined for him to coach me eventually."(MSG)
When asked if he would travel to Europe to see some of the Rangers top prospects and young players, (Buchnevich, Chytil and Andersson), Quinn said "If I have to go to Guam, I will go to Guam." (Sportsnet)
Adam Rotter: At first it seemed like David Quinn had connections to the Rangers because he coached Kevin Shattenkirk and Chris Drury also went to BU. It turned out that Quinn has known Jeff Gorton for 25+ years, Chris Drury for nearly 30 years and has a connection to most of the Rangers young core players. So the Rangers know Quinn well and he knows many of the players well. While there is hope that Quinn will help every player develop, some believe he can be a key in helping Jimmy Vesey turn into the player the Rangers think he can be.
Outside of the players that he knows already, I am sure he has or will speak with everyone on the roster and I wouldn't be surprised if he spent some time in July traveling across Europe to meet face to face with Henrik Lundqvist, Mika Zibanejad, Mats Zuccarello and the three players listed above. He's all about developing relationships and building trust and it sure seems like he isn't going to wait until September to start doing that.
