The Mets placed RHP Noah Syndergaard on the 10-day disabled list on Sunday after he contracted hand, foot and mouth disease.

Mets assistant GM John Ricco said he believes Syndergaard is expected to miss only one start. He said he believes Syndergaard contracted the disease while working at a youth camp during the All-Star break.

Hand, foot and mouth disease can affect people of all ages, although it is most common with children 7 years old or younger, according to Zalika Paul of Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare.

"It's kind of odd," Mets manager Mickey Callaway said before Sunday's game. "May be the first DL stint in baseball [due] to hand, foot and mouth disease. Got to be a record or something."

Syndergaard threw five innings of one-run ball in Friday's 7-5 win over the Yankees, throwing just 84 pitches in his second outing off the disabled list from a strained finger. The velocity on his fastball dropped from 98-99 mph to 94 mph in the fifth inning, however Syndergaard said he wasn't concerned about that.

"My velo was a little bit down, but I think that's just a little dead arm," he said Friday night. "I think that's mainly because missing six weeks and having another three days off for the All-Star break, but nothing to be alarmed."

The 25-year-old Syndergaard is 6-1 with a 2.89 ERA in 13 starts this season.
