The Giants are searching for their next head coach after firing Pat Shurmur. Here's the latest on potential candidate Matt Rhule...

The Giants have been told Matt Rhule will be taking the Panthers' head coaching job, reports SNY's Ralph Vacchiano.
Rhule had been expected to interview with the Giants on Tuesday, and was the favorite for the job.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, Rhule called the Giants before agreeing to take the Panthers job and gave them the opportunity to match that deal. The Giants instead decided to hire Judge.

Rhule is interviewing with the Panthers on Monday, and he'll be traveling to interview with the Giants on Tuesday, SNY's Ralph Vacchiano confirmed.
The Baylor coach was the prohibitive favorite entering Monday, when then-Giants candidate Mike McCarthy came to an agreement to become the Cowboys next head coach.

It appears that Rhule's Cabo vacation is coming to an end a bit sooner than expected.
According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Rhule is scheduled to meet with the Carolina Panthers on Monday, followed by the Giants on Tuesday.
SNY's Ralph Vacchiano has previously reported that Rhule's interview with Big Blue would come this week.
The Giants have already been busy with head coaching interviews, as Mike McCarthy met with the team on Friday, Eric Bieniemy interviewed on Saturday morning, and Ravens DC Don Martindale is set to meet with the team on Saturday as well.

Following Baylor's 26-14 loss to Georgia in the Sugar Bowl, Rhule hopped on a flight to Cabo with his family, as he said had previously said was his plan.
According to SNY's Ralph Vacchiano, Rhule is expected to be away for about a week, but that all indications are that he is still the favorite to land the Giants' job. It's still unknown where or when his interview with the team will take place.

Speaking at Tuesday's press conference for Wednesday's Allstate Sugar Bowl against Georgia, Rhule was generally asked about recent reports linking him to NFL vacancies, such as the Giants.
Rhule, whose name has been mentioned with the Browns and Panthers in addition to the Giants, said that he has not been contacted by any NFL teams and plans to be back at Baylor in 2020.
"Yeah, I plan on that," Rhule said when asked bout being back at Baylor in 2020. "I certainly think I will be."

Rhule has turned down the chance to interview with the Browns for their head coaching job, reports Adam Schefter of ESPN, who added that in addition to the Giants, Rhule is expected to be a "leading candidate" for the Panthers' head coaching job.
SNY's Ralph Vacchiano reported Monday that Rhule is the early favorite to replace Shurmur.

Rhule spoke on ESPN Central Texas radio on 1660 AM saying he plans to be on a beach somewhere with his wife after the Sugar Bowl -- meaning he will not be conducting any interviews prior to that.
Additionally, Rhule spoke very highly of his current coaching situation at Baylor, but also wasn't completely ruling out a move to the NFL.

One source familiar with Rhule's thinking expects there will be "strong interest" from Rhule when the Giants call, according to Vacchiano.
The source also said any idea that Rhule wouldn't want to work with Giants GM Dave Gettleman, who was retained by the franchise on Monday, is "ridiculous."

Multiple team and league sources have told SNY's Ralph Vacchiano that Rhule is the early favorite to replace Shurmur. The Giants owners like the 44-year-old head coach at Baylor "a lot," said once league source, and have been enamored of him since his one year as a Giants assistant back in 2012.
