The Giants are searching for their next head coach after firing Pat Shurmur. Here's the latest on potential candidate Josh McDaniels...

Jan. 5, 10:27 PM:

With the Patriots' 20-13 loss to the Tennessee Titans in the AFC Wild Card Round, the Giants are set for a McDaniels interview.

Because the Patriots' season is over, the Giants can interview McDaniels earlier than anticipated. The two sides are slated to meet Wednesday, SNY's Ralph Vacchiano confirmed.

Previously, McDaniels' earlier interview date was known to be Friday. The Giants, along with the Browns and Panthers, had sent in requests to meet with McDaniels for that date.

Jan. 2, 12:34 PM:

While the Patriots' playoff push keeps the Giants in wait-and-see mode with McDaniels, the earliest available interview date for New England's offensive coordinator is reportedly known.

After the AFC East-champion Patriots (12-4) host the Tennessee Titans (9-7) in Saturday's 8:15 p.m. wild-card game, McDaniels plans to conduct interviews next Friday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported Thursday.

The Giants appear to be in competition with the Browns and Panthers for McDaniels, who has received interview requests from Cleveland and Carolina on top of New York.

Dec. 30, 3:55 PM:

The "expectation" is that McDaniels will accept the Browns' request to meet with him about their vacant head coaching job, reports Josina Anderson of ESPN.

The Browns fired head coach Freddie Kitchens on Sunday night after the team finished its disappointing season with a 6-10 record after beginning it with playoff aspirations.

Star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. recently suggested he wanted out before changing his tune, meaning Cleveland could be a team in turmoil this offseason.

Dec. 30, 11 AM:

The Giants have requested permission to interview Patriots OC Josh McDaniels, reports Adam Schefter of ESPN.

According to Schefter, the Panthers and Browns have also requested permission to interview McDaniels for their vacant head coaching jobs.

The Giants interviewed McDaniels in 2018 before settling on Shurmur.

After interviewing with the Giants in 2018, McDaniels agreed to become the next head coach of the Colts before backing out and returning to the Patriots.

SNY's Ralph Vacchiano reported earlier Monday that McDaniels could get another look from the Giants, though one team source said New York won't necessarily be looking for an offensive-minded coach.

While the Giants will conduct a search to replace Shurmur, Vacchiano reports that 44-year-old Baylor head coach Matt Rhule is the early favorite to take over, and that a broad search might simply be "window dressing" if Rhule wants the job.
