Six takeaways from Tuesday's game...
1) Facing his first major league batter since the 2018 ALDS, Luis Severino came in expecting to throw about 70 pitches (ended up throwing 67)…he used up 12 of those on the leadoff hitter. Brian Goodwin was caught looking on the first pitch, took two balls on the next couple and then proceeded to foul off the next six pitches. Goodwin held Severino to a full count before walking on the 12th pitch. But, Severino managed to escape the inning with no runs scored and just one hit to go with the walk, but used up 19 pitches.
2) Things opened up for the Yankees in the bottom of the second inning. Gleyber Torres got things started with both their first hit and first run of the game, scoring off an RBI single from Gio Urshela that also sent Luke Voit to second after being walked the at-bat before. Then, Cameron Maybin hit the second ball he saw off the glove of Michael Hermosillo out by the left field wall for a double, sending Voit in to score and Urshela to second. But the Yankees couldn't capitalize on what eventually became a bases loaded situation, and went into the third inning only up 2-0.
3) Luis Severino was replaced by Jonathan Loaisiga after 4.0 innings pitched. He finished off his first outing of the year with two hits allowed, two walks and four strikeouts in a scoreless performance. Of his 67 pitches on the night, 47 were strikes, though foul balls were a problem early on. However, those should fall back down to normal as he ups his pitch count and gains back his full arm strength. Speaking of which, Severino's fastball topped out at 99 mph by the end of his night.
4) The Yankees drove in three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning off hits by Cameron Maybin, DJ LeMahieu and Didi Gregorius, before Gleyber Torres blew things with a three-run homer--his 38th of the year--to left-center, giving New York an 8-0 lead. LeMahieu continues to play extremely well, leading the team in batting average at .329 and bringing his RBI total to 94, making 100 possible with 10 games left to play.
5) Jonathan Loaisiga, Stephen Tarpley, Cory Gearrin and Chance Adams finished up the pitching for the Yankees after the fourth inning. Loaisiga was nearly perfect in 2.0 innings, striking out three batters, walking one and allowing zero hits. Tarpley was on a similar path after striking out four batters to just one hit, but things got a bit edgy for him at the top of the eighth after allowing another two hits, so Gearrin came in to finish the inning off with a double play. Adams ended things for New York with a scoreless ninth inning.
6) Aaron Judge and Austin Romine struggled at the plate Tuesday night, both going 0-for-4 and combining for four strikeouts. Judge did score a run in the fourth after being walked, but the game was certainly a cool down night for Judge, who's played well as of late.

What's next
The Yankees will look to reach 100 wins in back-to-back seasons for the first time since doing so three years in a row between 2002-2004, as they continue this three game series with the Angels. CC Sabathia will take the mound for New York for potentially his final regular-season game at Yankee Stadium.
