Five takeaways from Sunday's game

1) After coughing up four runs in his last start, Domingo German coasted to a one-run performance across 6 2/3 innings. German threw 108 pitches on his way to scattering four hits and three walks, while striking out seven batters. German has been fantastic filling in for Luis Severino, to the point that it's hard to suggest the club would have received better from its injured ace.

2) Mike Tauchman is by no means lighting the world on fire with his bat, but he has had some success at Yankee Stadium where seven of his eight hits have gone for extra bases, including today's two-run home run.

3) Miguel Andujar, New York's designated hitter, grabbed a lone soft single, but finally hit a ball on the screws in his final at-bat today (102.2 mph, his hardest hit ball of the season). Andujar was struggling before his shoulder injury and it has continued upon his return. In 22 plate appearances, Andujar owns a measly .523 OPS and has yet to record an extra-base hit.

4) Tommy Kahnle, recorded a crucial strikeout in the top of the seventh inning with runners on first and second and two outs. Kahnle has now posted 11 consecutive relief appearances without giving up a hit or a run, which is tied with Dellin Betances for the club's record of such a string. Kahnle's performance lowered his ERA to 1.38 on the season.

5) The Yankees persevered in its test against a team that was playing quite well by taking two of three games from the AL Central leaders. It seems all the Yanks have done this season is persevere, continually fighting through injuries, often with a rag-tag team. The good news is that the club has some regulars getting closer to a return, which in turn might yet lead it to a strong season.

What's next

The Yankees will host the Mariners on Monday at Yankee Stadium to begin a four game series. CC Sabathia will start against Seattle righty Felix Hernández.
