Things you should know about tonight's game...

1) Wheeler (9-7) took the tough-luck loss after he allowed one run on just four hits while striking out nine and walking none. The righty threw 97 pitches on the night, 65 of which were strikes. Wheeler's only run allowed came on a sacrifice fly by outfielder Chris Shaw -- good for the first RBI of his Major League career -- in the seventh inning. He has now allowed only two runs in his last three starts and has struck out 23 batters in 21 innings pitched during that span.

2) The Giants blew the game wide open with six runs off the Mets' bullpen in the eighth inning to jump ahead, 7-0. Robert Gsellman failed to record an out and allowed two runs on two hits, including a home run to rookie Aramis Garcia, who was making his Major League debut. Daniel Zamora and Drew Smith also struggled in the inning. Zamora allowed two runs in 2/3 of an inning while walking one and striking out two. Like Gsellman, Smith could not record a putout and let in two runs on three hits while walking one as the bullpen continued to struggle with its command. Jacob Rhame finally made the bleeding stop as he relieved Smith and promptly ended the inning by striking out Gregor Blanco.

3) The Mets' offense mustered only three hits on the night and failed to deliver in a key situation in the seventh inning when they had two runners on base with nobody out against young starter Andrew Suarez. Austin Jackson singled after Jeff McNeil got hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, but Wilmer Flores popped out before Jay Bruce hit into an inning-ending double play to erase the threat. Bruce is now hitting .221 on the year and has just two RBIs since his return from a lengthy stay on the disabled list due to a sore right hip.

The Mets (59-75) continue their series in San Francisco with the Giants (68-68) on Saturday at 4:05 p.m. on SNY.

Steven Matz (5-11, 4.36 ERA) gets the ball for the Mets. He will be opposed by the veteran Derek Holland (7-8, 3.65 ERA), who will be making his 26th start of the year for the Giants.
