This might not have been the start to the offseason most expected from the Giants. They added players — good ones, too — like tight end Isaiah Likely and linebacker Tremaine Edmunds. Aside from that, though, it hasn’t been a wild spending spree.

The Giants targeted players: running back Kenneth Walker and center Tyler Linderbaum. They also worked to try to retain a couple of their own, like Wan’Dale Robinson and Cor’Dale Flott. When those prices got too high, though, they bowed out.

That sounds familiar to anyone who watched how John Harbaugh operated in Baltimore.

Good teams aren’t built in free agency. Bad ones that flicker briefly are. The open market is a valuable tool to supplement a roster, but teams get in trouble the minute they enter bidding wars for players who are available for a reason.

If Harbaugh returns the Giants to glory, the draft, not free agency, will be the reason why.

With so much going on in Giants land, though, we figured this would be a good time to open the mailbag and take your questions on the state of the team...

Are Giants fans going to “Love” the fifth overall selection? Or are fans going to be “Downs” on the pick like it’s going out of “Styles?” - @BigBlueUnited

It’s still early. The pro day circuit is usually when draft rumors begin to run rampant. You trust the people you know around the league to gather intel and relay it to you. Once you hear the same thing a few times, you can start to piece together what might happen. It’s an evolving process. The week before the draft is usually when predictions are most accurate.

Draft projections right now are little more than connecting dots based on what transpired in free agency. That can still be fun, though. Start with Sonny Styles. The Giants added Tremaine Edmunds and retained Micah McFadden. Would they really draft another linebacker in the top five? The Giants didn’t do anything at safety, but No. 5 still seems a bit early for that level of non-premium position (Caleb Downs).

Which brings up Jeremiyah Love. The Giants pursued Kenneth Walker III but couldn’t get a deal done because the price got too high. If the Giants were willing to pay a running back close to $12 million annually, why wouldn’t they draft one fifth overall? One with even greater physical gifts than Walker?

One other minor note: most mock drafts heading into free agency had the Chiefs selecting Love at No. 9. The Chiefs then signed Walker instead. Did they know the running back had no shot of getting to them? Maybe …

Again, it’s nothing but theories and guesses at this point. The coming weeks will provide more clarity.
