The Mets' hot streak is alive and well as they topped the Marlins on Wednesday, 7-2, giving them a four-game sweep of their NL East rival. >> Box Score
Five Takeaways from Wednesday's game
1) Two starts ago, lefty Steven Matz recorded his first complete game outing, then on his ensuing start, on Aug. 2 against the Pirates, he had a hiccup and only tossed 3.2 innings. Matz returned to something closer to his complete-game form on Wednesday. Matz threw 6.2 innings, allowing seven hits and two runs with seven punch outs against the Marlins en route to the win. He's 5-0 at Citi Field this season.
2) The defensive prowess of Amed Rosario was put on display almost immediately once again. With a runner on first, Pete Alonso rushed in for a copper and quickly went to second for the force out. The only thing faster than Alonso's turn, throw and agility to get back to first base himself was Rosario's turn back to Alonso with the throw, as the Mets completed an impressive 3-6-3 double play in the first inning. In the ninth inning, Todd Frazier made an equally impressive barehanded throw to first for an out, shutting down any sniffs of a Miami comeback. Earlier in the game Frazier had a 5-5-3 double play himself as well to end an inning.
3) Alonso didn't just bring the heat defensively, the power was on display at the plate as usual. Alonso had a two-run homer to put the Mets in front in the first inning, a lead they never surrendered. It was the third-straight game Alonso had a home run. Jeff McNeil also got back to the long ball, after hitting home runs in three-straight games earlier this week, he notched some insurance for the Mets in the seventh inning with a line-drive homer to center field.
4) Despite the efforts of Alonso and McNeil, offensively this one belonged to Michael Conforto. In the third inning, Conforto blasted a two-run homer and after McNeil's, he tacked on his second of the game to bring the score to 7-2. Conforto also added another run scored when Alonso homered, as Conforto walked aboard one at-bat prior. With his two dingers on the day, Conforto now has 101 career home runs. The only other Mets players to ever reach 100 home runs in their career before turning 27 are Darryl Strawberry and David Wright. Wednesday was the fifth multi-home run game of Conforto's career.
5) Following Matz' rebound, it was a flawless day by the Mets bullpen. Justin Wilson finished the seventh frame for Matz with a strikeout, then Jeurys Familia had a clean eight inning. Luis Avilan made quick work of the final inning, adding a strikeout.
