After losing the end of Thursday's suspended game, which was blown by Edwin Díaz, the Mets lost their regularly scheduled game Friday to the Cardinals, 9-5, thanks to Jeurys Familia's eighth-inning implosion. >> Box score
Five things to know from Friday's game...
1) Familia entered in the eighth with a 5-4 lead gave up four runs. On his second pitch, he gave up a solo homer to Mets nemesis Paul DeJong, who drove in the game-winning run in the suspended game. DeJong has eight homers in 75 at-bats against the Mets. Familia then gave up a three-run homer to Dexter Fowler with two outs. It's the second time in his career Familia allowed two homers in a game, the first coming this season on April 6 against Washington. He's allowed five homers this season after giving up three all of last season. The four runs allowed increased Familia's ERA to 6.91 for the season as his return to the Mets continues to be disastrous.
2) An error led to the Mets falling behind 4-1 in the fifth, but an error allowed them to score three of their own in the seventh, capped off by Wilson Ramos' go-ahead two-run single. Kolten Wong's throwing error with the bases loaded and no outs allowed Pete Alonso to reach base and Carlos Gómez to score to cut the Mets' deficit to 4-3, giving Alonso his 50th RBI of the season. Dom Smith struck out and Todd Frazier hit into a fielder's choice with the runner thrown out at home before Ramos went the other way through the hole on the right side of the infield to drive in two and give the Mets a 5-4 lead.
3) Things were going fairly well for Steven Matz until the fifth inning, during which he threw a whopping 43 pitches. He should've gotten out unscathed, but a Frazier fielding error on a potential double-play ball prolonged the inning with one out, and Matz surrendered a pinch-hit, opposite-field, three-run homer to José Martinez, giving St. Louis a 4-1 lead. Matz ended up pitching a perfect sixth inning and finished with six strikeouts.
4) Matz responded in the bottom of the fifth by crushing a solo homer to left field to bring the Mets back to within 4-2. It was his first homer of the season and the third of his career; he hit two home runs last season. He finished 2-for-2 and is now 6-for-23 (.261) at the plate this season.
5) Robert Gsellman worked a scoreless top of the seventh before the Mets tied it in the bottom half. Hector Santiago gave up a solo homer to Wong in the ninth. Santiago has allowed at least one run in five of his last six appearances.
