The Mets had their eyes on a potential trade for Indians C Yan Gomes, but the Nationals jumped the gun first.

According to Fancred Sports' Jon Heyman, the Nationals acquired Gomes through a trade with the Indians on Friday. Minor league RF Daniel Johnson was the exchange for Gomes.

The Mets may not have finalized with their Robinson Cano-Edwin Diaz trade just yet, but that doesn't mean they have stopped exploring more options to bolster their roster for 2019.

SNY's Andy Martino reported on Nov. 21 that both the Mets and Indians had discussed a deal for the 30-year-old, as Cleveland put him on the trade market. Martino even suggested adding in OF Brandon Nimmo to potentially get one of Cleveland's pitchers on the market like Corey Kluber or Carlos Carrasco.

And, even though the Mets are reportedly giving away a few pieces in the not-yet-official Cano-Diaz pact, the team was "optimistic" they can pursue the trade for Gomes, according to MLB Network's Jon Morosi. The team's officials believe they have the prospects and payroll flexibility to make a compelling deal for the veteran catcher -- even after the Cano-Diaz deal is finished.

Now, the Mets will have to scratch Gomes off their list of catchers on the market. There are still very good options left including multiple free agents like Wilson Ramos, Yasmani Grandal, and Jonathan Lucroy. Francisco Cervelli and Russell Martin are also reportedly on the trade block as well.

The Mets currently have Kevin Plawecki and recently-tendered Travis d'Arnaud on the 40-man roster at the moment.

Though the Mets missed out on Gomes, this optimism from GM Brodie Van Wagenen and the Mets' front office shows they know there is more work to be done to fufill the goal to compete in 2019.
