Suffering through shoulder and Achilles injuries, Dellin Betances threw just two-thirds of an inning as a member of the Yankees last season.

But the hard-throwing right-hander is confident he can hit the ground running as a member of the Mets in 2020.

"This offseason, I've spent a lot of time working on my body," Betances said Saturday at Mets Fan Fest. "I've thrown three bullpens already, so I feel good throwing off the mound. I'm doing more running now than I was earlier in the offseason. I'll be ready to go for this year and I'm definitely excited."

Part of that excitement stems from the fact that Betances has seen what some of his fellow relievers can do.

"We have some electric arms and I think we have a very deep bullpen," Betances said "I've played with [Jeurys] Familia in the World Baseball Classic, and seeing [Edwin] Diaz in Seattle and [Seth] Lugo last year with what he was able to do. We have so many guys and in this game you need a deep bullpen.

"Those days when some guys aren't available, you need other ones to fill those roles. You've got to pass the baton and I'll do whatever I can to fill what holes they need me to fill."

That role has yet to be determined. Last season, the Mets were unwilling to move Diaz out of the closer's role, despite his continued struggles. Lugo performed well in a multiple-inning setup role, but the addition of Betances gives Luis Rojas another option to close should Diaz falter again in 2020.

Though he's a four-time All-Star, Betances has just 36 career saves and never served as the Yankees' primary closer. No matter what his role out of the bullpen is, there's no question what a healthy Betances can bring to the table.
