While introducing Edwin Diaz and Robinson Cano after making his blockbuster trade, Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen invoked his mission statement from earlier this offseason.
Noting the "hard work," "collaboration," and "unwavering commitment" he said would exemplify the franchise, Van Wagenen said the deal is a signal.
"This trade should be a signal to our players and our fans that words alone will not define this franchise," he said.
When asked about the rest of the offseason, Van Wagenen was clear that the Diaz-Cano deal was just the beginning.
"We did not make this move to have this be our last move," he said, "adding that their "mission" is to add more talent around them and the rest of the team.
While the deal was being discussed, Van Wagenen said he was in constant contact with Mets COO Jeff Wilpon and roughly a dozen others from the front office -- including newly-hired assistant GMs Adam Guttridge and Allard Baird.
"The New York Mets and the ownership group. ... we have a winning mindset," Van Wagenen said. "And collectively, we believe that everything is possible and nothing is impossible."
When asked about parting with top prospects Jarred Kelenic and Justin Dunn, Van Wagenen explained landing Cano and Diaz was an opportunity they couldn't pass up.
"The opportunity to go fill two primary needs was paramount in trying to get this deal done," he said. "And we were willing to make those sacrifices."
