Every Monday, we'll be taking a look at how the Yankees' top prospects (their MLB.com Yankees Top 10 rankings are in parenthesis) are faring.
Jonathan Loaisiga, SP, Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (No. 2) - 2019
Loaisiga didn't make a start with the RailRiders this past week because he was back up with the Yankees for a very brief stay. Loaisiga tossed three innings of scoreless relief, picking up the win in the Yanks comeback victory over the Angels on April 24. After the outing, the Yanks sent Loaisiga back to SWB.
Albert Abreu, RHP, Double-A Trenton (No. 3) -- ETA 2020
Abreu was lit up in his last start, allowing six runs on eight hits (including a home run) in four innings of work. Abreu walked two and struck out five and saw his ERA balloon to 7.31 across 16 innings.
Deivi Garcia, RHP, High-A Tampa (No. 4) -- ETA 2020
Garcia continues to get better as the season ramps up. In his latest start, Garcia hurled 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball. Garcia allowed five hits and walked just one batter, while striking out 10. The 19-year-old now owns a 3.06 ERA on the season.
Clarke Schmidt, RHP, High-A Tampa (No. 5) -- ETA 2020
Schmidt was less than stellar in his latest outing. In 4 2/3 innings, Schmidt allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits and three walks. Schmidt struck out four, but for the third straight start failed to complete five innings of work despite matching his season-high in pitches thrown (85).
Trevor Stephan, RHP, Double-A Trenton (No. 8) -- ETA 2019
Stephan hit the 7-day injured list (back injury) after another poor outing in which he allowed five runs on seven hits and five walks. Stephan did strike out eight batters in the contest. Batters are hitting .333 off of Stephan and he owns a 9.00 ERA on the season.
Roansy Contreras, RHP, Low-A Charleston (No. 10) -- ETA 2022
Contreras, 19, surrendered two runs on four hits and one walk in 4 2/3 innings on April 23, taking his first loss of the season. Contreras threw a season-high 91 pitches (58 strikes) and now owns a 3.32 ERA in 19 innings this season.
Luis Gil, RHP, Low-A Charleston (No. 13) -- ETA 2022
I watched Gil's last start in person Friday night and it was impressive. Gil continued his mastery of hitters, throwing five hitless and scoreless innings with eight strikeouts. Gil walked three batters, but largely dominated hitters with a fastball that sat in the 94-95 mph range, while topping out at 97 mph for the night. Gil now possesses a 1.04 ERA and 1.04 WHIP for the season with 26 strikeouts in 17 1/3 innings.
Luis Medina, RHP, Low-A Charleston (No. 14) -- ETA 2022
Medina, 19, continues to struggle with his control and it's preventing him from consistent success in 2019. Medina has walked 13 hitters in 14 innings this season (including four in four innings in his last start) and his ERA stands at 9.64 with a whopping 2.64 WHIP.
Josh Breaux, C, Low-A Charleston (No. 15) -- ETA 2021
I also saw Breaux demonstrate his fierce bat speed Friday night in which he stroked a couple of RBI-singles. Breaux has hits in seven of his last eight games, which has boosted his average to .265 on the season. Breaux strikes out a lot (25 Ks in 68 at-bats) and doesn't show much desire to walk (only three free passes this season), so improving that ratio is something that the 21-year-old will have to work on this season.
Garrett Whitlock, RHP, Double-A Tampa (No. 16) -- ETA 2020
Whitlock was removed from his Saturday start after just one inning (25 pitches). There has been no word as to the reasoning and Whitlock was not immediately placed on the injured list. In 19 innings this season, Whitlock has posted a 1.89 ERA for the Thunder.
