Five takeaways from Saturday's game
1) The Yankees would certainly like to see more of this J.A. Happ. The left-hander, who entered the game with a 6.29 ERA at home this season, tossed 5.1 innings, allowing just two runs on five hits and striking out five. Happ left the game with two runners on in the sixth inning and the two runs came when Adam Ottavino allowed a two-out bloop single to Randall Grichuk to break a scoreless tie.
2) Luke Voit was hitless in his first game off the IL. He was up in the bottom of the ninth with the tying run on third and go-ahead run on first but he was called out looking on a borderline high strike to end the game.
3) Aaron Judge looks poised for a big second half. After going 1-for-3 on Friday, the Yankees' slugger collected four singles on Saturday, three with exit velocities of 106 mph or higher and a fourth that gave the Yankees a run in the ninth to continue their streak of not being shutout this season. He did strike out with a runner on to end the seventh inning, although it was on a generous called third strike that was inside off the plate.
4) Gary Sanchez was close to being the hero in the fifth inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, the AL home run leader hit a soft liner into center field but was robbed of an RBI by Grichuk, who made a diving catch to end the threat.
5) Brett Gardner extended his hitting streak to six games on Saturday and his multi-hit streak to three games with a 2-for-4 day at the plate.
6) DJ LeMahieu picked up a base hit in the ninth inning, which means he has not gone hitless in back-to-back games since April 22-23. He also continued to show Gold Glove-caliber defense in the field, making a diving stop to his glove side in the third inning.
