Five things to know from Wednesday's game

1. After allowing a leadoff walk and an RBI double, Gerrit Cole settled down to retire 19 of his next 20 batters, including 14 in a row, with just one walk in that span. He then allowed three extra-base hits on three straight pitches, including a two-run home run to Dwight Smith, Jr., but still produced a quality start. He finished with four hits and three runs allowed with seven strikeouts in his 6.2 innings of work.

2. The long ball was certainly in play right from the start. DJ LeMahieu belted the second pitch of the ball game down the right field line for his first home run of the season. Aaron Judge and Aaron Hicks both went deep for the first time this year in the third inning.

3. LeMahieu, Judge, and Giancarlo Stanton reached base a combined 11 times. LeMahieu's 4-for-5 night brought his average up to an even .500, while Judge went 2-for-3 with two RBI, a walk and reached base on catcher's interference. Stanton also ripped an RBI single, reached first on catcher's interference, and walked.

4. Gary Sanchez and Brett Gardner continued to struggle. They went a combined 0-for-8 with seven strikeouts and are a combined 0-for-23 to start the season.

5. Luis Avilan, Chad Green, and Brooks Kriske combined for 2.1 shutout innings of relief to secure the win for the Yanks, who improved to 3-1 on the season. Kriske struck out two batters in his MLB debut.
