Yankees take another hit as Troy Tulowitzki hits IL with calf strain

Tulo is the team's 11th member on the list

Yankees SS Troy Tulowitzki had to leave Wednesday's game against the Tigers after suffering a Grade 1 left calf strain, according to multiple reports.

Tulowitzki came out in the top of the fourth inning, as Gleyber Torres shifted to shortstop with Tyler Wade coming in at second base. The veteran infielder had one at-bat where he popped up, and made an off-balance throw to end the third inning. It's unknown what play exactly the injury occurred on.

It's another big blow for the Yankees, who just can't seem to stay healthy early on this season. They already led the Majors with 10 players on the Injured List, including Giancarlo Stanton, Luis Severino, and Miguel Andujar, coming into this contest. Tulowitzki officially hitting the list moves the total to 11 as the team heads to Baltimore for their first road trip on Thursday.

As of now, there is no timeline for Tulowitzki, but it would be tough to see him miss significant time again considering his double heel surgery that forced him to miss the entire 2018 season as well as half of the 2017 season.

This was Tulo's fifth regular-season game with the Yankees. He entered today going 2-for-10 at the plate with one homer and one double.

Replacing Tulowitzki will be Thairo Estrada, who was supposed to start the season in Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday. Instead, he was the only infielder left on the Yankees' 40-man roster, which made his call-up a no-brainer.

Yankees fans may remember Estrada's 2018 injury, as it wasn't one to forget. In an attempted robbery, Estrada was shot in his home Venezuela before the season began. While that hindered the start of his season, he couldn't stay healthy throughout, which led to only 18 total games.

When he gets the nod from manager Aaron Boone, Estrada will be making his big league debut with the pinstripes.
