Free agent 2B Daniel Murphy is heading to the Rockies, with Yahoo! Sports Jeff Passan reporting both sides have agreed to a two-year, $24 million deal.

The 33-year-old played 56 games with the Nationals before being traded to the Cubs last season. While hitting .300/.341/.442 with six homers and 29 RBI in Washington, Murphy owned a .297/.329/.471 line with six homers and 13 RBI over 35 games.

So why does Murphy matter to the Yankees? He could have been an option to place at second base if the Yankees decided to shift Gleyber Torres to shortstop in the absence of Didi Gregorius for most of the season.

Murphy is also extremely familiar with New York, having played for the Mets from 2008-2015. He played a vital role in the Mets' World Series push in 2015 as well, hitting .328 with seven homers and 11 RBI over 14 games.

However, GM Brian Cashman hasn't seemed to be high on bringing another second baseman in for next season. Instead, the Yankees still have their sights on Manny Machado, who they met with on Wednesday.

If the Yankees decide to change their plan at some point this offseason, second basemen like Brian Dozier, Josh Harrison, and DJ LeMahieu are still on the market.
