The Yankees fell to the Pittsburgh Pirates by a score 5-3 in 10 innings in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader.

Here are the takeaways...

-- Ben Rice notched home run No. 30 in a huge spot. With the Yankees trailing, 3-0, in the seventh, Rice hit a titanic shot to right field off reliever Carmen Mlodzinski to tie the game. After the Yankees had failed to capitalize on chances with runners on earlier in the game, Rice came through in the clutch.

-- That sent the game to extra innings, and the Pirates took a 4-3 lead in the top of the 10th, when Fernando Cruz left a splitter up in the zone and Jared Triolo dunked it into left for an RBI single. Jake Mangum added another run on an RBI single, and that was all she wrote for the Yankees.

-- Gerrit Cole was absolutely locked in during the early innings. Mixing in all of his pitches, Cole had six strikeouts his first time through the order, and carried a perfect game into the fifth inning.

But Nick Gonzales broke up the perfect game with a single to left with two outs in the top of the fifth. Next up, Jacob Gonzalez lined a two-run homer to left, as Cole hung a changeup right down the heart of the plate. Gonzalez’s fourth homer of the year put the Pirates up, 2-0.

Cole stayed in to pitch the seventh, and Gonzales added a solo homer to extend Pittsburgh's lead to 3-0. The right-hander went 7.0 innings, allowing three earned runs on four hits while striking out a season-high 11 batters without a walk.

-- The Yankees offense just couldn't get anything going against Pirates starter Mitch Keller. The right-hander went 5.0 shutout innings, allowing just three hits while striking out six and walking two.

The Bombers did have chances, though, putting two runners on base in both the fourth in fifth innings, but failing to scratch a run across in either frame. Jazz Chisholm Jr. struck out looking as part of the failed rally in the fourth, and his challenge of the third strike was unsuccessful. Chisholm is now just 4-for-17 on ABS challenges this season, the third worst rate in baseball.

-- The Yankees struck out 12 times, including three punchouts apiece from Rice and Cody Bellinger. The Yanks also went 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
