The Yankees decided against extending a qualifying offer to free agent Didi Gregorius, and now it seems they may be content to let him walk to a new team without trying too hard to bring him back.

Industry people do not expect the Yanks to pursue Gregorius "very aggressively," SNY's Andy Martino reported on Monday night.

Martino reported on Nov. 7 that it was a close call regarding whether or not Gregorius would return to the Bronx in 2020, but that Gregorius' side did not think a "pillow contract" -- the term for a one-year deal to restore health or value -- was necessary since he came back from Tommy John surgery in June and has already proven his health.

One team that has already been connected to the 29-year-old Gregorius is the Reds, who made an eight-win improvement in 2019 and are looking to take the next step.

Gregorius struggled during the regular season in 2019 after returning from surgery, hitting just .238 with a .276 OBP, but his .441 slugging percentage could be a sign to interested teams that the player who was one of the Yankees' key cogs from 2016 to 2018 is still in there.

In the playoffs this past season, Gregorius had four hits in 10 at-bats -- including a homer and six RBI -- in the ALDS as the Yanks beat the Twins. But he struggled badly in New York's ALCS loss to the Astros, with just five hits in 23 at-bats and a .261 slugging percentage.

From 2016 to 2018, Gregorius slashed .277/.319/.472 with 72 homers, 82 doubles, and 243 RBI in 423 games. But while Gregorius could be a good bounceback candidate in 2020, the Yanks already have a potentially loaded infield.

As presently constituted, the Yanks would likely go into next season with Gio Urshela at third base, Gleyber Torres at shortstop, and DJ LeMahieu at second base. Miguel Andujar -- who missed the majority of the 2019 season due to a torn labrum and surgery to fix it-- is also an option at third base.
