The Yankees lost out on another pitching target they were pursuing.
RHP Nathan Eovaldi, to whom the Yankees turned their attention after missing out on the Patrick Corbin sweepstakes earlier in the week, will re-sign with the Boston Red Sox on a four-year, $67.5 million deal pending a physical, according to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal and MLB.com's Mark Feinsand.
Eovaldi went 6-7 with a 3.81 ERA last season with the Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays in his first season back from Tommy John surgery, but stood out in the playoffs that led to him being one of the more sought-after free agents this offseason.
The 28-year-old Eovaldi went 2-1 with a 1.61 ERA in six postseason appearances, including a memorable six-inning, two-run performance in relief in Game 3 of the World Series.
He was among the starting pitchers the Yankees were targeting once Corbin and the Washington Nationals agreed to a six-year, $140 million deal.
However, New York naver made a formal offer, according to Newsday's Erik Boland, and the team was not willing to offer him a deal longer than three years, according to Fancred's Jon Heyman.
The Yankees still have J.A. Happ on their radar, and Dallas Keuchel is also another top target among free-agent starting pitchers.
