Our weekly minor league report canvases the Yankees farm system, providing updates about the status of the teams in action and the organization's top prospects.
Notes: Top-30 prospect rankings (via MLBPipeline.com) are club based with overall MLB ranks, if applicable, in parenthesis. Prospects currently in the major leagues will not be covered here. Team records and statistics are through games played July 19, 2018, unless otherwise noted.
Top 10 prospects
No. 1 (No. 37) -- Estevan Florial (OF) -- High-A Tampa -- ETA 2020
Florial returned to the Tarpons lineup Thursday, going 1-for-5 after missing just over two months due to right wrist surgery. Florial beat timeframe projections by about a full month, which bodes well for his development. Florial was a hitting machine through his rehab assign-ment in the Gulf Coast League, something he and the Yankees sure hope will carry over through the rest of the season. Florial is hitting .245 with a .348 on-base percentage and a .338 slugging percentage in 161 plate appearances with High-A Tampa before the surgery.
No. 2 (No. 39) -- Justus Sheffield (LHP) -- Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre -- ETA 2018
Sheffield allowed a run (on a home run) in 1 1/3 innings of work in the Futures Game. The question with Sheffield is whether or not he will be used as a trade chip (I doubt it) or if he will be a component of the Yankees' stretch run (I would not be surprised). Sheffield's ERA with the RailRiders sits at 2.53 in 57 innings with a 1.18 WHIP and 56 strikeouts.
No. 3 (No. 60) -- Albert Abreu (RHP) -- High-A Tampa -- ETA 2020
Abreu is on the seven-day disabled list with an undisclosed injury. It is the second DL stint for Abreu this season. Abreu has thrown just 48 1/3 innings this season, sporting a 4.28 ERA with batters hitting just .228 off him.
No. 4 -- Chance Adams (RHP) -- Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre -- ETA 2018
Adams' uninspiring season continued Wednesday as he allowed four runs on five hits and three walks in 3 1/3 innings. Adams had seemed to be in the midst of a turnaround, but this game demonstrates that the Yankees might have a decision to make on Adams' future with the organization.
No. 5 -- Luis Medina (RHP) -- Rookie Pulaski -- ETA 2021
Medina's last start encapsulates his label as a raw, but potentially electric pitcher. In 3 2/3 in-nings, Medina struck out seven batters, however he allowed four runs on five hits and four walks. For a 19-year-old, the results are hardly surprising, but surely the Yankees hope Medina can finish the season on a high note.
No. 6 -- Freicer Perez (RHP) -- High-A Tampa -- ETA 2020
Has been on the disabled list since early May. The time off the field has certainly curtailed any progression the Yankees hoped he would make this season. Perez's ERA sits at 7.20 across 25 innings (six starts) this season.
No. 7 -- Domingo Acevedo (RHP) -- Double-A Trenton -- ETA 2019
Acevedo took the loss Tuesday, hurling 6 2/3 innings of three-run ball. Acevedo uncharacteristi-cally walked four batters in the game, but struck out seven. Acevedo carries a 2.84 ERA and 1.13 WHIP with 40 strikeouts in 50 2/3 innings this season.
No. 8 -- Thairo Estrada (2B/SS) -- Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre -- ETA 2018
Estrada has been on the disabled list since early May with a back injury that might keep him off the field the rest of the season. Prior to the injury, Estrada was hitting just .152 in 33 at-bats with Scranton and .222 in 45 at-bats with High-A Tampa.
No. 9 -- Dillon Tate (RHP) -- Double-A Trenton -- ETA 2019
Tate, an Eastern Division All-Star, finds himself on the disabled list due to quad injury. The All-Star nod is the culmination of what can be described as a big turnaround from a player that dis-appointed in his initial time in professional ball after being the fourth overall draft pick in 2015. Tate maintains a 3.36 ERA and .218 batting average against in 82 2/3 innings for Trenton.
No. 10 -- Matt Sauer (RHP) -- Short-A Staten Island -- ETA 2021
Sauer allowed just one hit while walking three batters in a five-inning effort Thursday. The one-run effort was the third straight for Sauer, 19, in which he worked at least five innings. Sauer holds a 2.01 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and .147 BAA in 31 1/3 innings for the Pizza Rats.
