While the Yankees snapped their five-game losing streak Monday against the Seattle Mariners, the story was the status of slugger Matt Carpenter after he left the game with a fractured foot.
Carpenter, 36, left Monday’s game after fouling a ball off his left foot in the first inning. He finished the at-bat striking out and was pinch-hit for in the third inning by Tim Locastro.
"I don't know the time frame on it, but he'll be on the IL," manager Aaron Boone said after the game. "He's become such an important factor in that room and incredibly productive. It's a blow and hopefully we'll get him back at some point."
Boone confirmed that the veteran slugger will see a foot specialist, but with less than two months to go, the rest of Carpenter’s season is up in the air.
"It's not ideal, pretty disappointed" Carpenter said. "My mindset is this won't be the end for me this year. I'm hopeful I can come back and contribute."
Without knowing the extent of the injury he hopes to be back some time in September.
Carpenter has had a resurgent season with the Yankees. After a few listless seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals and being released, he was relegated to the Texas Rangers’ Triple-A affiliate, where he revitalized his career by tinkering with his batting stance and slashing .275/.379/.613 with a .992 OPS, six home runs and 19 RBI.
The Rangers granted his release and in late May, the Yankees came calling.
