The Yankees were actively pursuing free agent starting pitching target Patrick Corbin, but he found a new home in the National League instead.

Corbin reportedly agreed to a six-year deal, $140 million with the Nationals on Tuesday barring a physical, SNY's Andy Martino confirmed.

Martino noted the Yankees were not willing to go six years in their potential deal for Corbin, which is why they missed out when Washington delivered on that front. However, since the Yankees dealt for James Paxton earlier this offseason, they didn't necessarily view Corbin as an urgent priority.

Corbin met with the Yankees in New York last week but they did not make strides toward a deal, Martino reported. The 29-year-old lefty also met with the Phillies and Nationals in their respective cities.

According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, the Phillies are making it clear to Corbin that they won't be out-bid for the pitcher, and that clubs still in the hunt are aware of it.

The Yankees were weighing the option of retaining free agent J.A. Happ on a shorter-term deal over signing Corbin to a lucrative contract.

Corbin, who made his second All-Star team with the Diamondbacks this past season, has close relatives who want him to wear pinstripes. But Yankees GM Brian Cashman has said his family's fandom won't play as much a role.

Corbin went 11-7 with a 3.15 ERA and 1.05 WHIP with Arizona in 2018, striking out a career-high 246 batters in 33 starts (200 innings).

Dallas Keuchel and former Yankee Nathan Eovaldi are also top targets among free agent starters.
