The two fastest catchers in MLB history to 100 home runs prominently played for New York's teams.

Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez etched his name in the record books in the top of the third inning of Friday night's 10-2 win at the Los Angeles Dodgers when he hit a solo home run to put New York up 2-0.

The blast over the left-field wall marked Sanchez's 29th of the season, but it also made him the fastest to 100 homers among catchers and American League players, surpassing then-Dodgers catcher Mike Piazza (422 games) and fifth-year Texas Rangers OF/1B/3B Joey Gallo (377 games) at 355 games.

"It's special to be the catcher who gets there the fastest," Sanchez said through an interpreter, according to MLB.com's Bryan Hoch. "I feel happy about that. It's special, but there's probably another catcher who is going to come up and break that record."

The only player in MLB history to reach 100 long balls quicker was former Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard, who did so with 325 games.

In his fourth year with the Yankees, the 26-year-old Sanchez has quickly ascended among the best in the league at the plate from the catcher position, recording 252 RBI and counting along the way.

The milestone puts Sanchez firmly in the same conversation as Piazza, the 2016 Hall of Fame catcher who belted 427 home runs in 16 years -- eight with the New York Mets (1998-2005) -- from 1992 to 2007.

While Piazza hit 396 of those homers as a catcher and 31 elsewhere, Sanchez has done 80 from behind the dish with 19 in the DH spot and one at 1B.

"(Sanchez is a) special talent," said Yankees manager Aaron Boone. "When he's controlling the strike zone, he's elite. It's good to see him continue to swing the bat as well as he is and building that confidence. Hopefully he will continue with the momentum he's got going."
