The Yankees and the Mets are headed in opposite directions this year, and each has something the other wants.

One of the best teams in baseball, the Yankees are looking to add another starting pitcher ahead of the trade deadline to build up for a run at the World Series. The Mets, meanwhile, have been one of the worst teams in the league since starting 11-1.

The Mets have a few top-of-the-line starters in Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard, while the Yankees have the prospects to potentially make a deal for either happen. Yankees GM Brian Cashman didn't distance himself from any rumors with the Mets, but didn't exactly flame the deGrom-to-the-Yankees fire.

"I've been engaged with all clubs, including the Mets. It's the job, and if you can, you match up your ownership recommendations on both ends and see if it takes you anywhere," Cashman said, via Neil Best of Newsday. "I have been talking with Sandy. I've also been talking with [special assistant] Omar Minaya."

There is just one team in the league that Cashman won't talk with.

"But I'll stay engaged with the Mets along with every other club and see where it takes us," Cashman said. "I don't think I'll have any dialogue with the Boston Red Sox. I'll take them off the call list. But other than that we'll be very busy trying to improve ourselves."

The Mets would likely ask for 2B Gleyber Torres in any package for one of their two aces, a price the Yankees would almost certainly scoff at.

"It's very difficult to pick up an impact starter no matter what," Cashman said. "But the job is to try to improve the club, so no question about it, I think pitching is the area of focus. The main focus would be the rotation, and if not you fall back maybe and see if you can improve the pen."

Cashman admits that he can't predict what'll happen before the deadline.

"So it gives us comfort as we continue to navigate our efforts to try to upgrade our pitching between now and July 31," Cashman said. "We'll see. It's hard to predict if it's going to happen, if it can happen, how much it's going to cost. But usually it's pricey."
