Manager Aaron Boone announced Sunday that closer Aroldis Chapman would not be on the Yankees' ALDS roster because he missed a mandatory workout last Friday.
Boone spoke to media again Tuesday before Game 1 of the ALDS against the Cleveland Guardians, and was asked if there's a chance to use Chapman in a future series during the postseason or if he is no longer in consideration.
"We'll see," Boone said. "I mean, for now, he's staying away and I know he's throwing down in Miami. But for now, he's away."
The Yankees elected to go with 12 pitchers for the ALDS roster, and it was undetermined if Chapman was going to make the ALDS roster had he shown up to the workout. GM Brian Cashman fined Chapman for missing the workout, and he could still face disciplinary action.
The longtime Yankees closer had struggled throughout the season, going 4-4 with just nine saves and a 4.46 ERA in 43 appearances this year. He was eventually moved out of the closer role midseason as Clay Holmes took his spot in the ninth.
Chapman's personal assistant apologized on the 34-year-old's behalf for the mistake in an Instagram post Monday, adding that the veteran hopes to be back on the mound soon.
“I wanted to take this moment to apologize on behalf of myself and Chapman,” Santiago Mateo told his followers. “We all make mistakes. We got to learn from our mistakes. Instead of being reactive, we got to be proactive and find solutions to make it better.
“I apologize and I know Chap apologizes to the fans, to the organization and to everyone that he hurt. All I ask is for privacy and some space for him to heal. He should be back soon, everything is getting back on track.”
Boone said Sunday that Chapman's excuse for missing the workout was unacceptable and added that he was disappointed in him.
"Chappy will not be on the postseason roster," Boone said. "He was scheduled to be here Friday as part of our workout with the live, was not, and not what I thought was an acceptable excuse. So I've had him stay away for now."
"I was disappointed that he wasn't here for that, but we have to move on and get ready for a really good opponent," Boone said.
