The Yankees dropped the series to the Seattle Mariners, losing the rubber game, 7-3, on Wednesday afternoon.
Here are the takeaways...
- The Mariners ambushed Gerrit Cole in the first inning, scoring six runs on five hits including three home runs.
After Adam Frazier singled to start the game and Jesse Winker walked, Eugenio Suarez took Cole deep to left field that gave Seattle a 3-0 lead in the blink of an eye.
A batter later, Carlos Santana ripped a homer to right center field that gave the Mariners a 4-0 lead and back-to-back home runs before Cole could even record an out and before Yankee fans could even settle in their seats.
With a runner on, Jarred Kelenic hit his fourth dinger of the season and the M’s were up 6-0 about 20 minutes into the game.
To his credit, Cole stabilized himself after that disastrous first inning and pitched six innings, striking out eight.
- The six runs were more than enough for Seattle’s newly acquired pitcher Luis Castillo, who pitched brilliantly in his debut for his new team. Castillo’s only real blemish came in the seventh inning when Kyle Higashioka took him deep on the last pitch he threw in the game.
It was Higgy’s seventh home run of the season and made it 7-3. That’s how the score ended after two hours and 47 minutes.
- Cole took the loss (9-4) and saw his season ERA go up to 3.56.
- Wandy Peralta gave up a home run to Winker in the seventh inning as all seven of the Mariners’ runs came via home run.
- The Yankees scratched out five hits, with their 8-9 hitters in Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Higashioka going 4-for-6 and driving in all three runs.
