With Steven Matz and Jason Vargas sidelined, the Mets decided to use newcomer Wilmer Font to spot start on Wednesday against the Padres.

The Mets acquired Font, 28, on Monday from the Rays and while he has mostly been used as a reliever he is stretched out to make a start.

Font threw 59 pitches over three innings on May 1 in relief and the Mets plan to use him for about 75 pitches or so on Wednesday.

The right-hander started five games last year and pitched to a 1.71 ERA, allowing four runs in 21 innings of work while striking out 18.
