Jeff Wilpon provided music to Mets fans' ears at the Annual Turkey Giveaway on Friday.
The team owner and COO was asked how aggressive the Mets plan to be this offseason in improving the roster, to which Wilpon responded, "aggressive."
"I mean we have to win more games," he said. "We have too good of a pitching staff. Mickey (Callaway) and Dave (Eiland) did an excellent job with what we had but have to score runs. We gotta put runs on the board and let these guys go pitch and hold the lead. How we do that and where that comes from, Brodie (Van Wagenen) has multiple different scenarios of how to get those runs and take us from what's projected right now in low 80s to 90-win team. "
While the Mets have indicated they will likely not be in play for marquee free agent Manny Machado, Wilpon's comments about being aggressive do come on the heels of SNY's Andy Martino reporting that there is serious trade interest in Noah Syndergaard.
Dealing the flame-throwing right-hander in exchange for a bat would certainly be considered an "aggressive" move, but Wilpon downplayed the seriousness of a potential deal involving Syndergaard.
"It hasn't been brought to me as a firm -- something that can happen," he said. "A decision has not been made yet. It all depends on what Brodie thinks he can get back. If he thinks the return is outsized from what the value of Noah is, I guess he'll suggest it and move on and do that. But it takes two to make a trade."
Wilpon also addressed signing 2018 Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom to a long-term contract as one of many priorities this offseason but added that those talks are still premature.
"I assume we'll have conversations with the new agent at some point here in the near future. Probably at the Winter Meetings," Wilpon said. "There's a lot of things that are priorities. We didn't win many games last year so we got a lot of priorities. ... I'm sure at some point we'll get to speaking to Jake."
