The Mets have some good representation in the Appalachian League this fall, and Baseball America is recognizing two of the club's prospects as the top players in the league.
Francisco Alvarez, a 17-year-old catcher, and the Mets' first-round draft pick this year in Brett Baty were ranked the league's No. 1 and No. 2 prospects respectively.
Alvarez is the Mets' top catching prospect and the fifth overall prospect in the organization. He also cracked the publication's Top 100 list Back in September. Signing with the Mets for $2.7 million back in 2018, Alvarez hit .312/.407/.510 with seven homers and 26 RBI in 42 games at both levels of rookie ball this season.
Here's MLB.com's scouting report on the 5-foot-11, 220-pound catcher:
"A compact swing and solid approach allow Alvarez to hit to all fields, and he has plenty of raw power to continue to tap into. He's a below-average runner, but also isn't a base-clogger. Alvarez's defensive game is behind his bat, but club officials have zero doubt that he can stay behind the plate long term. He has a strong arm and some solid actions behind the plate, but he'll have to improve his overall receiving."
As for Baty, the 12th overall pick slashed .257/.449/.462 with seven homers and 37 RBI between three levels of minor league ball in his first season (51 games). Like Alvarez, the third baseman still has much room to grow, but his power bat from the left side of the plate was on display thus far.
Other than these two prospects, the Mets also have SS Jaylen Palmer and RHP Junior Santos in that Top 20 list for the Appy League. Palmer ranks 10th on the list, while Santos comes in at 12.
Shortstop Andres Gimenez, who serves as the Mets' third-best prospect to MLB.com, is also representing the club well in the Arizona Fall League.
Per MetsMerized's Michael Mayer, Gimenez made the AFL's All-Star team after slashing .316/.366/.500 with 14 RBI through 10 games.
The 21-year-old, known for his smooth hands at short, had another solid season in Double-A Binghamton in 2019. He hit .250/.309/.387 with nine homers, 22 doubles, 37 RBI and 54 runs scored over 117 games.
