The Jets found their 19th head coach in franchise history this week in Adam Gase, who they officially announced on Friday. But Gase's hiring came as a surprise to many, with former Packers head coach Mike McCarthy reportedly having his eyes only set on the Jets' job.

McCarthy is the more accomplished head coach compared to Gase, and having developed Aaron Rodgers during his time in Green Bay, the marriage with QB Sam Darnold seemed like a match made in heaven.

But, according to CBS Sports' Jason La Confora, the Jets and McCarthy didn't pan out due to staffing issues.

First, McCarthy did have some concerns about the Jets' front office structure, but his interview went well with ownership. But, when the Jets asked to see a list of potential coaching staff members from McCarthy, he began to question if it was the right move for him. McCarthy put the list together as requested, but after doing so, the talks began to simmer out.

Baylor head coach Matt Rhule, who was among the finalists, also had issues with staffing. He wanted to bring in college coaches to round out his assistants, and the Jets were not fans of that idea. They came to him with a suggested group of potential candidates, and Rhule ulimately pulled himself out of the running.

Now McCarthy will sit out the 2019 season, as he will focus on time away with his family. It's not the worst situation for him considering the Packers still owe him $9 million after firing him midseason. His family still resides in the Green Bay area.
