Scott Simonson to start at tight end for Giants on Sunday

N.J. native will make first appearance this season after nine catches with Big Blue last year

With both Evan Engram and Rhett Ellison ruled out for the Giants on Sunday, Big Blue will turn to Scott Simonson to start at tight end against the Bears.

The Giants re-signed Simonson during the team's bye week after the Red Bank, N.J., native was released in September with an injury pay settlement. He suffered an ankle sprain in the team's final preseason game.

Simonson went undrafted in 2014 and played for both the Raiders and Panthers before joining the Giants in 2018. He caught nine passes for 84 yards and a touchdown, earning four starts at tight end last season.

"It really helps having a guy that has been here kind of knowing what we do and how we do things," tight ends coach Lunda Wells told The Post earlier this week. "He did a nice job while he was out in terms of taking care of his body. He looked a little bit lighter, which is good."

Simonson won't have an easy assignment in his first game of the season on Sunday. In addition to pass catching responsibilities, he'll also do what he can to help a struggling offensive line block elite pass rushers Kahlil Mack and Leonard Floyd

"It won't be totally new, but it will be a test, for sure. They are two great pass-rushers," Simonson said. "You have to fall back on your technique. You don't want to let the hype of things get you out of your technique because that's when you end up on their highlight reel. I'm going to be physical and do my thing."

The Giants face the Bears at Soldier Field in Chicago Sunday at 1 p.m.
