Before he was officially captain of the Yankees, Derek Jeter became Mr. November.

Seventeen years ago on this date, Jeter lifted the Yankees with a walk-off home run off Arizona Diamondbacks closer Byung-Hyun Kim in the 10th inning of Game 4 of the World Series.

The game started on Halloween night, and the Yankees trailed 3-1 while people were still trick-or-treating. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Tino Martinez tied the game with a two-run homer off Kim.

Jeter stepped up to the plate at 11:59 p.m., and his at-bat prolonged past midnight, marking it the first time baseball would be played in November. (The 2009, 2010, 2015, 2016 and 2017 World Series have since held games in November.) The 2001 World Series was pushed back a week due to the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The next game -- the same night -- Scott Brosius hit a game-tying two-run home run off Kim in the bottom of the ninth, and Alfonso Soriano's walk-off single in the bottom of the 12th (which technically occurred on Nov. 2, 2001) propelled New York to a Game 5 victory.

Of course, the Yankees were blown out in Game 6 in Arizona and lost Game 7 on Luis Gonzalez's walk-off single.

What happened next for Kim? He pitched in the majors until 2007, when he was 28 years old, totaling a 4.42 ERA in 394 career games (87 starts). He pitched for the Red Sox in 2003 but did not appear in the 2003 ALCS.

As for Jeter? He became captain of the Yankees in June 2003, won his fifth World Series title in 2009, recorded his 3,000th hit off David Price in 2011 and retired in 2014. In 2020, he'll be eligible for the Hall of Fame for the first time.
